Dr Grant Russell is a Melbourne GP and Monash University’s Professor of Primary Care Research. He has a special interest in primary care reform and refugee health. His work has engaged with multi-disciplinary and cross-cultural research, and has a particular focus on improving primary care outcomes for vulnerable communities.

Grant is a graduate of the University of Western Australia and completed GP training with the Family Medicine Program in 1989. He subsequently worked as a GP in Perth, setting up a small, independent general practice with colleagues.

His academic career was built following a move to Canada where he worked in two leading family medicine research centres for nearly 7 years. He led major evaluations of Ontario’s primary care reforms and received a prestigious President’s Award from the North American Primary Care Research Group for his leadership in several national investigations of research capacity in Canadian primary care.

Moving back to Australia in 2009, Grant combines his decades of experience in clinical general practice with a passion for working with other disciplines to achieve meaningful health care improvement. He is the co-principal investigator of IMPACT, a five year international program to improve access to primary care for vulnerable populations. He also leads OPTIMISE – a multi-site intervention designed to improve the quality of primary care delivered to Australia’s refugee populations. He has a passion for helping those new to research learn how significant quality primary care can be in improving the lives of  vulnerable members of our society. While much of his work is done in collaboration with policy makers, managers and clinicians caring for the community, he continues to work as an active general practitioner in suburban Melbourne.
