February is on its way out, but we’re not going anywhere! At the beginning of the month we set some goals for our little org to promote more original content by Human Books, and we’re so proud that this fantastic community of GPs have been busy as anything getting their voices out there!
In recent news…
Dr. Srishti Dutta wrote a piece for the National Multicultural Festival, speaking about her journey from India to the UK to Australia, and how those experiences have shaped her own definition of multiculturalism.
Dr. Teah Mogae also wrote a piece for the National Multicultural Festival, describing the way that her cultural heritage has uniquely influenced her practice.
Dr. Wei-May Su wrote about community trauma, diving into the mechanisms behind the reasons communities are struggling to heal after the rolling crises of early 2020, and how healthcare professionals are tasked to “sit with suffering”.
Following this explosion of community trauma, wellbeing is becoming a hot topic in politics. From debates around Jacinda Ardern’s “wellbeing budget” to newly-released studies on the effects of the bushfires, things are looking up for people who have been long campaigning for a more holistic understanding of population health needs. If you are a GP who specialises in whole-patient care, or the sociological factors that impact wellbeing, get in touch with us!
In the spotlight this week, oncologist Dr. Ranjana Srivastava wrote a powerful piece for the Guardian about the social rewards of “super-specialisation” working in contrast with whole-patient care. If you are a GP or registrar and Dr. Srivastava’s article rang true to your experiences of imposter syndrome, or if you want to talk about being a generalist in a specialist’s world, get in touch! We want to hear from you.
Coming up…
The call for March submissions have been sent out! We’ve already had a fantastic response, but we’d love to hear more, especially from GPs or registrars who want to practice generating these creative pieces. If you want to submit a project or piece you have already completed that you’d like us to include on the site, or if you’d like to write an entirely new piece, or even if you have been mentoring a talented young GP or registrar who needs somewhere promoting their passions, get in touch! Engage with our social links at the bottom of the page, join our shelves by filling in our volunteer form, or nominate a deserving colleague by contacting us via email! We’d love to hear from you.
Next week, we will also be doing a snapshot of February in review, just to look at how far this project has come in the past month. I know a lot of the work we do is often behind the scenes, so I want to take the time to shine a light on the way this wonderful community of health experts have lifted each other up.
Happy reading!
