Prof. Merilyn Liddell is an academic GP with an extensive background in business leadership, education, and academic leadership. She has been an influential force in Asian-Australian educational and business collaborations, facilitating universities’ expansion into international spheres and cross-cultural endeavours.

Her 32 years’ clinical practice includes extensive experience in Canada, the UK, and Australia, in both rural and suburban practices. These experiences informed her later career in academic family medicine, giving her the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of the way that the underlying values and personality of doctors can influence patient satisfaction and outcomes.

Merilyn’s academic research career began with explorations of this balance between clinical practice and the clinician themselves. As Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor at Monash University, she focussed primarily on communication and consultation skills. As she expanded her research into cross-cultural experiences in medical education, she began to develop opportunities for greater cross-cultural academic leadership.

Under her leadership, Monash developed the first medical school outside of Australia and New Zealand to achieve full Australian Medical Council accreditation. This massive project was part of the academic development of the Malaysia campus as a whole, including overseeing the establishment of a new physical campus location, and the academic growth of numerous different Faculties and driving for accreditation. Merilyn held concurrent positions as Pro Vice-Chancellor of Monash University (Australia) and as President of Monash University Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur.

These experiences translated well in her later role as President and Chief Executive/Executive Director at RMIT International University Vietnam, where she expanded the capability of the campus and worked extensively to coordinate the needs of a globally-focussed Australian university with the priorities of local and international stakeholders. Her experience in governance, analytical approach, and creative problem solving skills enabled her to handle complex regulatory and governance environments, balance expectations for graduates against organisational capabilities, and facilitate the successful expansion of universities as a business as much as an educational body.
